Glaucoma and medical marijuana in Illinois: do you qualify?

Yes. The Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Program (Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program) lists Glaucoma as a qualifying condition. An Illinois-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often because of high pressure inside the eye.

Weak evidence. Cannabis lowers eye pressure for only a few hours at a time. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabinoids are an ineffective treatment for glaucoma, and eye specialists don't recommend it in place of standard care.

Symptoms Illinois patients most often hope to ease:

  • High eye pressure that is hard to control
  • Eye pain or headaches linked to eye pressure
  • Side effects or difficulty using daily eye drops
  • Worry about vision loss
  • Trouble sleeping
Before you start. Relying on cannabis instead of prescribed treatment can lead to permanent vision loss. Cannabis can lower blood pressure, which may reduce blood flow to the optic nerve and could be harmful in glaucoma.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for glaucoma?

Helpful records include: a diagnosis letter or exam notes from your ophthalmologist or optometrist confirming glaucoma; recent eye pressure readings and visual field test results; a list of your glaucoma eye drops and other medicines, including blood pressure medicines. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Illinois provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Illinois?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Provisional access while the card is processed.

Can I renew online in Illinois?

In most cases, yes. IDPH sends reminder emails starting 90 days before a card expires. You renew through the same online portal with a new provider certification and fee; a lifelong-renewal option exists for qualifying patients at $50 for three years.
