Dystonia and medical marijuana in Illinois: do you qualify?

Yes. The Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Program (Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program) lists Dystonia as a qualifying condition. An Illinois-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About dystonia

A movement disorder causing involuntary, often painful muscle contractions.

Not enough research. There is little good research on cannabis for this condition specifically. Patients usually use it for related symptoms such as pain, muscle spasms, nausea or poor sleep, where some evidence exists.

Symptoms Illinois patients most often hope to ease:

  • Painful muscle pulling and cramping
  • Neck pain and stiffness from cervical dystonia
  • Muscle fatigue from constant contractions
  • Trouble sleeping because of pain
  • Stress that makes spasms worse
Before you start. Cannabis can add to the drowsiness and confusion caused by baclofen, benzodiazepines and anticholinergic medicines such as trihexyphenidyl. Dizziness and slowed reactions can raise the risk of falls, especially when dystonia affects walking or balance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for dystonia?

Helpful records include: a diagnosis letter or notes from a neurologist or movement disorder specialist confirming dystonia; records of botulinum toxin injections, surgery or other treatments you have had; a current medicine list, including muscle relaxants and anticholinergics. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Illinois provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Illinois?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Provisional access while the card is processed.

Can I renew online in Illinois?

In most cases, yes. IDPH sends reminder emails starting 90 days before a card expires. You renew through the same online portal with a new provider certification and fee; a lifelong-renewal option exists for qualifying patients at $50 for three years.
