Does Arnold-Chiari malformation qualify in Illinois?

Yes. The Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Program (Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program) lists Arnold-Chiari malformation as a qualifying condition. An Illinois-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About Arnold-Chiari malformation

A structural defect where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, often causing headaches and neck pain.

Not enough research. There is little good research on cannabis for this condition specifically. Patients usually use it for related symptoms such as pain, muscle spasms, nausea or poor sleep, where some evidence exists.

Symptoms Illinois patients most often hope to ease:

  • Headaches at the back of the head, especially after coughing, sneezing or straining
  • Ongoing neck and upper shoulder pain
  • Burning, tingling or nerve pain in the arms and hands
  • Muscle tightness and spasms in the neck and upper back
  • Trouble sleeping because of pain
Before you start. THC can make dizziness, balance problems and lightheadedness worse, which are already common with Chiari malformation. Some people with Chiari have sleep-related breathing problems, so combining cannabis with opioids, sedatives or alcohol needs extra care.
