Does Ehlers-Danlos syndrome qualify in Illinois?

Yes. The Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Program (Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program) lists Ehlers-Danlos syndrome as a qualifying condition. An Illinois-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

Inherited connective-tissue disorders causing loose joints, frequent injury and chronic pain.

Not enough research. There is little good research on cannabis for this condition specifically. Patients usually use it for related symptoms such as pain, muscle spasms, nausea or poor sleep, where some evidence exists.

Symptoms Illinois patients most often hope to ease:

  • Chronic joint and muscle pain
  • Pain after partial or full joint dislocations
  • Muscle spasms and tightness
  • Trouble sleeping because of pain
  • Nausea and digestive discomfort
Before you start. THC can raise heart rate and lower blood pressure, which may worsen dizziness and fainting in people with POTS. If you have vascular EDS, talk with your specialist first, because THC can cause a fast heart rate and blood pressure changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome?

Helpful records include: a diagnosis letter or genetics notes confirming your type of EDS; records from specialists such as rheumatology, genetics or cardiology, including any POTS diagnosis; a list of pain treatments you have tried, including physical therapy and medicines. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Illinois provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Illinois?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Provisional access while the card is processed.

Can I renew online in Illinois?

In most cases, yes. IDPH sends reminder emails starting 90 days before a card expires. You renew through the same online portal with a new provider certification and fee; a lifelong-renewal option exists for qualifying patients at $50 for three years.
