Does CIDP qualify for a medical card in Illinois?

Yes. The Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Program (Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program) lists Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy as a qualifying condition. An Illinois-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About CIDP

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy — nerve damage that causes weakness and numbness.

Not enough research. There is little good research on cannabis for this condition specifically. Patients usually use it for related symptoms such as pain, muscle spasms, nausea or poor sleep, where some evidence exists.

Symptoms Illinois patients most often hope to ease:

  • Burning, tingling or electric nerve pain in the hands and feet
  • Muscle cramps and aching
  • Trouble sleeping because of nerve pain
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety and low mood that come with a long-term illness
Before you start. Cannabis does not replace immunoglobulin, steroids or plasma exchange, which are what protect your nerves. Weakness and numbness already affect balance in CIDP, and THC can make unsteadiness and falls more likely.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for CIDP?

Helpful records include: a CIDP diagnosis from a neurologist, ideally with nerve conduction study or EMG results; records of your treatments, such as immunoglobulin or steroid courses; a list of nerve pain medicines you have tried and their side effects. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Illinois provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Illinois?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Provisional access while the card is processed.

Can I renew online in Illinois?

In most cases, yes. IDPH sends reminder emails starting 90 days before a card expires. You renew through the same online portal with a new provider certification and fee; a lifelong-renewal option exists for qualifying patients at $50 for three years.
