Does anxiety qualify for a medical card in New Mexico?

Yes. The New Mexico Medical Cannabis Program (Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act) lists Anxiety disorder as a qualifying condition. A New Mexico-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About anxiety

Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. They're among the most common mental health conditions in the US.

Limited evidence. Evidence is limited. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) improves anxiety symptoms in a public-speaking test for people with social anxiety. THC can ease anxiety at low doses for some people and worsen it at higher doses for others.

Symptoms New Mexico patients most often hope to ease:

  • Racing thoughts and constant worry
  • Trouble falling asleep because of a busy mind
  • Muscle tension and restlessness
  • Feeling on edge in social or work situations
  • Physical stress symptoms such as a tight chest or upset stomach
Before you start. THC can worsen anxiety and trigger panic attacks, especially at higher amounts or with high-potency products. Cannabis can add to the drowsiness of benzodiazepines, sleep medicines and alcohol.
