Does Huntington's disease qualify in Mississippi?

Yes. The Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program lists Huntington's disease as a qualifying condition. A Mississippi-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About Huntington's disease

An inherited disease that breaks down nerve cells, causing movement, thinking and mood problems.

Not enough research. The National Academies found insufficient evidence for Huntington's chorea.

Symptoms Mississippi patients most often hope to ease:

  • Involuntary jerking or writhing movements
  • Irritability and anxiety
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Weight loss and poor appetite
  • Muscle stiffness and discomfort
Before you start. THC can worsen memory, attention and judgment, which may already be affected by Huntington's disease. Cannabis can trigger or worsen psychosis, anxiety and depression, which are common in Huntington's disease.

Helpful records include: genetic test results or a neurologist's letter confirming Huntington's disease; notes from your Huntington's clinic or neurologist about current symptoms and stage; a full list of medicines for movement, mood and sleep. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Mississippi provider will tell you if more is needed.

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. 10-day review; card available within 5 days of approval.

Can I renew online in Mississippi?

In most cases, yes. Certification and the card are good for one year. Renew annually through the portal with a new certification, which can be done by telehealth if your practitioner has already seen you in person. The fee is the same as for a new card.
