Does anxiety qualify for a medical card in Minnesota?

Very likely. Minnesota doesn't limit certification to a fixed list — providers can recommend cannabis for conditions they believe it will help. That includes patients with anxiety when the provider agrees it's appropriate.

Yes. OCM lists 'any medical condition' for which the patient's practitioner has recommended, approved or authorized cannabis as a qualifying condition.

About anxiety

Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. They're among the most common mental health conditions in the US.

Limited evidence. Evidence is limited. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) improves anxiety symptoms in a public-speaking test for people with social anxiety. THC can ease anxiety at low doses for some people and worsen it at higher doses for others.

Symptoms Minnesota patients most often hope to ease:

  • Racing thoughts and constant worry
  • Trouble falling asleep because of a busy mind
  • Muscle tension and restlessness
  • Feeling on edge in social or work situations
  • Physical stress symptoms such as a tight chest or upset stomach
Before you start. THC can worsen anxiety and trigger panic attacks, especially at higher amounts or with high-potency products. Cannabis can add to the drowsiness of benzodiazepines, sleep medicines and alcohol.

How to get certified in Minnesota

  1. See a Minnesota-licensed physician, physician assistant or APRN (telehealth is allowed) and give them your email address.
  2. The practitioner certifies your condition in the Medical Cannabis Registry, and you'll get an email with your personal registration link.
  3. Using that link, enroll online within 90 days of the certification, uploading a photo of an accepted ID and adding a caregiver if needed.
  4. Wait for approval by email, which can take up to 30 days.
  5. Schedule a dispensary visit, complete the patient self-evaluation in your registry account, and bring your photo ID, medication list and visit summary.
  6. A pharmacist at the dispensary reviews your account and recommends products.

Minnesota allows the evaluation by telehealth, so you can see a Minnesota-licensed provider by video. Our evaluation starts at $79 and is charged only if you're approved.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for anxiety?

Helpful records include: notes or a diagnosis letter from a primary care doctor, psychiatrist or therapist describing your anxiety; a list of current and past treatments, including therapy and medicines you have tried; your current medicine list, especially antidepressants, benzodiazepines and sleep aids. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Minnesota provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Minnesota?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Up to 30 days after a complete application is received.

Can I renew online in Minnesota?

In most cases, yes. Enrollment lasts three years, and you then reenroll with a new practitioner certification. You must also complete a new self-evaluation before every purchase.
