Does nausea and appetite loss qualify in Minnesota?

Yes. The Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program lists Cancer (if it or its treatment causes severe or chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, or cachexia or severe wasting) as a qualifying condition. A Minnesota-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About nausea and appetite loss

Severe or persistent nausea and appetite loss can come from chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS, gastroparesis and other conditions, and can lead to dangerous weight loss.

Stronger evidence. There is conclusive evidence that oral cannabinoids treat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and limited evidence that they increase appetite and reduce weight loss in HIV/AIDS.

Symptoms Minnesota patients most often hope to ease:

  • Nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unwanted weight loss
  • Food aversions and changes in taste
  • Nausea that does not respond to standard medicines
Before you start. Heavy long-term cannabis use can rarely cause cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, which causes repeated severe vomiting. Cannabis is not recommended for nausea during pregnancy because THC can reach the baby.

How to get certified in Minnesota

  1. See a Minnesota-licensed physician, physician assistant or APRN (telehealth is allowed) and give them your email address.
  2. The practitioner certifies your condition in the Medical Cannabis Registry, and you'll get an email with your personal registration link.
  3. Using that link, enroll online within 90 days of the certification, uploading a photo of an accepted ID and adding a caregiver if needed.
  4. Wait for approval by email, which can take up to 30 days.
  5. Schedule a dispensary visit, complete the patient self-evaluation in your registry account, and bring your photo ID, medication list and visit summary.
  6. A pharmacist at the dispensary reviews your account and recommends products.

Minnesota allows the evaluation by telehealth, so you can see a Minnesota-licensed provider by video. Our evaluation starts at $79 and is charged only if you're approved.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for nausea and appetite loss?

Helpful records include: records of the condition causing your nausea, such as a cancer treatment plan or GI diagnosis; a list of anti-nausea medicines you have tried and how well they worked; notes on weight changes, eating difficulties and how often you are sick. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Minnesota provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Minnesota?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Up to 30 days after a complete application is received.

Can I renew online in Minnesota?

In most cases, yes. Enrollment lasts three years, and you then reenroll with a new practitioner certification. You must also complete a new self-evaluation before every purchase.
