Does cancer qualify for a medical card in Minnesota?

Yes. The Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program lists Cancer (if it or its treatment causes severe or chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, or cachexia or severe wasting) as a qualifying condition. A Minnesota-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About cancer

Cancer and its treatment — chemotherapy, radiation, surgery — can cause pain, nausea, vomiting, appetite loss and trouble sleeping.

Stronger evidence. The National Academies found conclusive evidence that oral cannabinoids prevent and treat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. There is not enough evidence that cannabis treats or cures cancer.

Symptoms Minnesota patients most often hope to ease:

  • Nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy
  • Loss of appetite and unwanted weight loss
  • Cancer-related pain
  • Burning or tingling nerve pain from chemotherapy
  • Trouble sleeping
Before you start. CBD can affect liver enzymes that process some chemotherapy and targeted drugs, so your oncology team must know about any cannabis you use. A few small studies have raised questions about whether cannabis use may affect how well immunotherapy works, which is worth discussing with your oncologist.

How to get certified in Minnesota

  1. See a Minnesota-licensed physician, physician assistant or APRN (telehealth is allowed) and give them your email address.
  2. The practitioner certifies your condition in the Medical Cannabis Registry, and you'll get an email with your personal registration link.
  3. Using that link, enroll online within 90 days of the certification, uploading a photo of an accepted ID and adding a caregiver if needed.
  4. Wait for approval by email, which can take up to 30 days.
  5. Schedule a dispensary visit, complete the patient self-evaluation in your registry account, and bring your photo ID, medication list and visit summary.
  6. A pharmacist at the dispensary reviews your account and recommends products.

Minnesota allows the evaluation by telehealth, so you can see a Minnesota-licensed provider by video. Our evaluation starts at $79 and is charged only if you're approved.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for cancer?

Helpful records include: pathology or imaging reports confirming your cancer diagnosis; recent notes from your oncologist describing your stage and current treatment plan; a full list of medicines, including chemotherapy, anti-nausea drugs, pain medicines and blood thinners. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Minnesota provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Minnesota?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Up to 30 days after a complete application is received.

Can I renew online in Minnesota?

In most cases, yes. Enrollment lasts three years, and you then reenroll with a new practitioner certification. You must also complete a new self-evaluation before every purchase.
