Does anxiety qualify for a medical card in California?

Very likely. California doesn't limit certification to a fixed list — providers can recommend cannabis for conditions they believe it will help. That includes patients with anxiety when the provider agrees it's appropriate.

Yes. Besides the listed conditions, a physician may recommend cannabis for any chronic or persistent symptom that substantially limits a major life activity or could cause serious harm if not relieved.

About anxiety

Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. They're among the most common mental health conditions in the US.

Limited evidence. Evidence is limited. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) improves anxiety symptoms in a public-speaking test for people with social anxiety. THC can ease anxiety at low doses for some people and worsen it at higher doses for others.

Symptoms California patients most often hope to ease:

  • Racing thoughts and constant worry
  • Trouble falling asleep because of a busy mind
  • Muscle tension and restlessness
  • Feeling on edge in social or work situations
  • Physical stress symptoms such as a tight chest or upset stomach
Before you start. THC can worsen anxiety and trigger panic attacks, especially at higher amounts or with high-potency products. Cannabis can add to the drowsiness of benzodiazepines, sleep medicines and alcohol.

How to get certified in California

  1. See a licensed California physician who examines you (telehealth is allowed if it meets the standard of care) and documents a serious medical condition.
  2. Get a copy of the physician's recommendation; the state's Written Documentation form can be used.
  3. Complete the CDPH Application/Renewal Form.
  4. Gather a government photo ID and proof of residency in your county.
  5. Make an appointment with your county's MMIC program office and apply in person.
  6. Pay the county fee (up to $100, reduced for Medi-Cal) and have your photo taken.
  7. Pick up your card once the county verifies the application, usually within 35 days.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for anxiety?

Helpful records include: notes or a diagnosis letter from a primary care doctor, psychiatrist or therapist describing your anxiety; a list of current and past treatments, including therapy and medicines you have tried; your current medicine list, especially antidepressants, benzodiazepines and sleep aids. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your California provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in California?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. County has 30 days to verify and 5 more days to issue the card; up to 35 days total for a complete application.

Can I renew online in California?

In most cases, yes. Renewal follows the same in-person county process as a new application and produces a new card number. Your existing medical documentation can be used if it is still valid.
