Does cachexia & wasting syndrome qualify in California?

Yes. The Medical Marijuana Identification Card Program (MMICP) lists Cachexia (wasting syndrome) as a qualifying condition. A California-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About cachexia & wasting syndrome

Severe, unintended loss of weight and muscle that comes with serious illnesses like cancer or HIV.

Limited evidence. There's limited evidence that cannabinoids increase appetite and reduce weight loss in HIV/AIDS.

Symptoms California patients most often hope to ease:

  • Poor appetite and feeling full quickly
  • Nausea that makes eating difficult
  • Ongoing loss of weight and muscle
  • Changes in taste or smell of food
  • Fatigue and low energy
Before you start. Dizziness, low blood pressure and sedation can raise the risk of falls in people who are already weak. People with weakened immune systems should avoid smoking cannabis because of a risk of lung infections from contaminated plant material.

How to get certified in California

  1. See a licensed California physician who examines you (telehealth is allowed if it meets the standard of care) and documents a serious medical condition.
  2. Get a copy of the physician's recommendation; the state's Written Documentation form can be used.
  3. Complete the CDPH Application/Renewal Form.
  4. Gather a government photo ID and proof of residency in your county.
  5. Make an appointment with your county's MMIC program office and apply in person.
  6. Pay the county fee (up to $100, reduced for Medi-Cal) and have your photo taken.
  7. Pick up your card once the county verifies the application, usually within 35 days.

California allows the evaluation by telehealth, so you can see a California-licensed provider by video. Our evaluation starts at $79 and is charged only if you're approved.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for cachexia & wasting syndrome?

Helpful records include: records confirming the underlying illness, such as a cancer, HIV or heart failure diagnosis; weight records over time showing unintended weight loss; notes from your oncologist, HIV specialist or dietitian about appetite and nutrition. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your California provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in California?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. County has 30 days to verify and 5 more days to issue the card; up to 35 days total for a complete application.

Can I renew online in California?

In most cases, yes. Renewal follows the same in-person county process as a new application and produces a new card number. Your existing medical documentation can be used if it is still valid.
