New Mexico medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions New Mexico patients ask most, based on the New Mexico Medical Cannabis Program (Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act)'s own guidance.

How much does a New Mexico medical cannabis card cost?

Nothing from the state. The Department of Health charges no fee to enroll or take part in the program. Your provider may charge for the visit.

How long does approval take?

Applications sent through the Online Patient Portal are typically processed within five business days. Once approved, you can view and save your electronic card in the portal.

Why get a medical card when adult-use cannabis is legal?

Enrolled patients buy without paying state cannabis taxes and can apply for a license to grow at home. Adults 21 and older can buy adult-use cannabis, but they pay those taxes.

Can I use my out-of-state medical card in New Mexico?

Yes, as a reciprocal participant. You register once a year at a participating dispensary, showing your home-state enrollment card and a matching photo ID, and both must be shown at every purchase.

My condition isn't on the list — can my provider still certify me?

No. New Mexico does not accept write-in diagnoses. You or your provider can petition the Medical Advisory Board to add the condition.
