Does migraines qualify for a medical card in New Jersey?
Yes. The New Jersey Medicinal Cannabis Program (MCP) lists Migraine as a qualifying condition. A New Jersey-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.
About migraines
Limited evidence. Research is mostly observational. Survey studies report fewer and shorter migraines among patients who use cannabis, but there aren't yet large controlled trials.
Symptoms New Jersey patients most often hope to ease:
- Throbbing headache pain during attacks
- Nausea and vomiting with attacks
- Frequent attacks that disrupt work and family life
- Trouble sleeping before or after an attack
- Neck and shoulder tension that comes with attacks

How to get certified in New Jersey
- See a New Jersey practitioner registered with the program (in person or by telehealth) to confirm a qualifying condition.
- The practitioner registers you and gives you a registry ID number and reference number.
- Create an account on the patient portal (njmmp.nj.gov) using those two numbers.
- Upload proof of New Jersey residency and a passport-style photo taken within the last 60 days.
- Choose the dispensary (Alternative Treatment Center) you plan to use, and pick a free digital ID or a $10 physical card.
- After approval, show your MCP ID at a medical dispensary to buy.
