Does menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) qualify in New Jersey?

Yes. The New Jersey Medicinal Cannabis Program (MCP) lists Dysmenorrhea as a qualifying condition. A New Jersey-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea)

Severe cramping and pain during periods.

Not enough research. There is little good research on cannabis for this condition specifically. Patients usually use it for related symptoms such as pain, muscle spasms, nausea or poor sleep, where some evidence exists.

Symptoms New Jersey patients most often hope to ease:

  • Cramping pain in the lower belly
  • Pain that spreads to the lower back and thighs
  • Nausea during periods
  • Headaches around periods
  • Poor sleep on heavy days
Before you start. Cannabis is not recommended if you could be pregnant, are trying to conceive or are breastfeeding. Severe or worsening period pain can signal conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, which need a medical evaluation.

How to get certified in New Jersey

  1. See a New Jersey practitioner registered with the program (in person or by telehealth) to confirm a qualifying condition.
  2. The practitioner registers you and gives you a registry ID number and reference number.
  3. Create an account on the patient portal (njmmp.nj.gov) using those two numbers.
  4. Upload proof of New Jersey residency and a passport-style photo taken within the last 60 days.
  5. Choose the dispensary (Alternative Treatment Center) you plan to use, and pick a free digital ID or a $10 physical card.
  6. After approval, show your MCP ID at a medical dispensary to buy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea)?

Helpful records include: notes from a gynecologist or primary care doctor about your menstrual pain and any underlying diagnosis; ultrasound or surgery reports if endometriosis, fibroids or other causes have been checked; a list of treatments you have tried, including pain relievers and hormonal birth control. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your New Jersey provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in New Jersey?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Usually within 1–2 weeks.

Can I renew online in New Jersey?

In most cases, yes. Renew through the patient portal up to 60 days before your card expires, with a current photo. Your practitioner decides how often you need a new authorization.
