Does fibromyalgia qualify for a medical card in Kentucky?

Yes. The Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program lists Fibromyalgia as a qualifying condition. A Kentucky-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About fibromyalgia

Widespread muscle pain with fatigue, sleep problems and trouble concentrating.

Moderate evidence. The National Academies found moderate evidence of improved short-term sleep in fibromyalgia; pain studies are small.

Symptoms Kentucky patients most often hope to ease:

  • Widespread aching pain
  • Poor, unrefreshing sleep
  • Muscle stiffness and tenderness
  • Fatigue that does not improve with rest
  • Anxiety and low mood
Before you start. THC can worsen fibro fog, memory and focus, especially in higher amounts. Cannabis can add to the drowsiness of pregabalin, gabapentin, amitriptyline, muscle relaxants and opioids.

Helpful records include: a fibromyalgia diagnosis letter or notes from your primary care doctor or rheumatologist; a list of treatments you have tried, including medicines, physical therapy and counseling; your current medicine list, especially sleep aids, nerve pain drugs and antidepressants. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Kentucky provider will tell you if more is needed.

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Application acknowledged within 15 days; approval or denial within 30 days; card issued within 5 days of approval.

Can I renew online in Kentucky?

In most cases, yes. Cards expire one year after issuance. To renew, get a new written certification (which can be done by telehealth) within 60 days before applying, then submit the renewal and $25 fee online.
