Does anxiety qualify for a medical card in Florida?

Very likely. Florida doesn't limit certification to a fixed list — providers can recommend cannabis for conditions they believe it will help. That includes patients with anxiety when the provider agrees it's appropriate.

Yes. Physicians may certify conditions of the same kind or class as, or comparable to, the listed conditions.

About anxiety

Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. They're among the most common mental health conditions in the US.

Limited evidence. Evidence is limited. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) improves anxiety symptoms in a public-speaking test for people with social anxiety. THC can ease anxiety at low doses for some people and worsen it at higher doses for others.

Symptoms Florida patients most often hope to ease:

  • Racing thoughts and constant worry
  • Trouble falling asleep because of a busy mind
  • Muscle tension and restlessness
  • Feeling on edge in social or work situations
  • Physical stress symptoms such as a tight chest or upset stomach
Before you start. THC can worsen anxiety and trigger panic attacks, especially at higher amounts or with high-potency products. Cannabis can add to the drowsiness of benzodiazepines, sleep medicines and alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for anxiety?

Helpful records include: notes or a diagnosis letter from a primary care doctor, psychiatrist or therapist describing your anxiety; a list of current and past treatments, including therapy and medicines you have tried; your current medicine list, especially antidepressants, benzodiazepines and sleep aids. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Florida provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Florida?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. About 10 business days for online applications; mailed applications take 3-5 extra days.

Can I renew online in Florida?

In most cases, yes. ID cards expire after one year; the state asks patients to submit renewal 45 days before expiration and pay $75 again. The physician must also re-evaluate the patient at least every 30 weeks, and those follow-up visits can be done by telehealth.
