South Dakota medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program
Answers to the questions South Dakota patients ask most, based on the South Dakota Medical Cannabis Program's own guidance.
Can I get my South Dakota certification through telehealth?
Not for the first visit. State law requires an in-person physical exam at the initial visit; it does not clearly address whether later follow-up visits can be virtual.
How much does a South Dakota medical cannabis card cost?
The card costs $75. Applicants whose household income is under 130% of the federal poverty level pay $20, and adding home cultivation or a second caregiver costs $20 each.
How long does approval take?
The Department of Health says it usually reviews applications within 2 to 4 days, and the mailed card generally arrives 4 to 10 days after approval.
Can I use my out-of-state medical card in South Dakota?
Yes, after registering as a nonresident cardholder. You receive a nonrenewable ID number valid for up to six months, or until your home card expires if sooner.
Can I grow cannabis at home in South Dakota?
Yes, if your card allows cultivation. You may keep two flowering and two non-flowering plants, and the add-on costs $20.
