Oregon medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions Oregon patients ask most, based on the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP)'s own guidance.

Why get an Oregon medical card if recreational cannabis is legal?

Registered patients can possess up to 24 ounces, grow at a registered site, and designate a caregiver or grower. These rights go beyond what adult-use law allows.

How much does an OMMP card cost?

The basic application is $200. It drops to $60 with SNAP, $50 with Oregon Health Plan, $20 with SSI or proof of military service, and is free for veterans with a 50% or higher service-related disability rating.

Who can sign my Attending Provider Statement?

Oregon-licensed MDs, DOs, physician associates, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, CRNAs and naturopathic physicians can sign. The provider must have primary responsibility for your care, review your records and perform a physical exam.

Can I apply if I don't live in Oregon?

No. OHA requires proof of Oregon residency and a government-issued ID, and Oregon does not honor other states' medical cards.

How long does it take to get my card?

OHA says cards are mailed within 7 to 10 business days for complete applications. Your receipt letter acts as a temporary card for 30 days.
