North Dakota medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions North Dakota patients ask most, based on the North Dakota Medical Marijuana Program's own guidance.

How much does a North Dakota medical marijuana card cost?

The application fee is $40 and is non-refundable. You can pay online or by check or money order. The card lasts two years, and hospice patients pay no fee.

Can any doctor certify me in North Dakota?

A North Dakota-licensed physician, physician assistant or APRN can certify you if they have a bona fide relationship with you, meaning they review your records, treat your condition and provide follow-up care. They cannot see you only to sign the certification.

Does North Dakota accept my out-of-state medical card?

Not directly. You can apply for a North Dakota nonresident card using your home-state medical card and ID from the same state. That card is valid for 60 days.

Can I grow my own cannabis in North Dakota?

No. North Dakota's medical marijuana law has no home grow provision, so you must buy from a registered dispensary.

How long does approval take?

The state says to allow 2-4 weeks after it receives a complete application, payment and your provider's certification. Missing information or poor-quality photos cause delays.
