New Jersey medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program
Answers to the questions New Jersey patients ask most, based on the New Jersey Medicinal Cannabis Program (MCP)'s own guidance.
Does a New Jersey medical cannabis card cost anything?
No state registration fee is charged. The digital ID card is free, and a physical card costs $10.
Why get a medical card when adult-use cannabis is legal in New Jersey?
Patients pay no state sales tax on medicinal cannabis, get priority service, and can buy up to 3 ounces every 30 days. Adult-use buyers pay sales tax and are limited to 1 ounce per transaction.
Can I see a provider by telehealth?
Yes. The CRC's guide for practitioners says they may use telemedicine to evaluate you, diagnose your condition and manage your treatment.
Can I grow my own cannabis in New Jersey?
No. The CRC says current law does not let it permit or regulate home growing of medicinal cannabis.
I'm visiting New Jersey — can I buy medical cannabis?
Visiting patients can get a non-renewable six-month New Jersey card by seeing a registered New Jersey practitioner and showing current registration from their home state. That card allows tax-free purchases.
