Maine medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions Maine patients ask most, based on the Maine Medical Use of Cannabis Program (MMCP)'s own guidance.

Do I need a state medical cannabis card in Maine?

No. Maine patients use a written certification from their provider, and OCP keeps no patient registry. Registry cards are issued to caregivers and dispensary staff, not patients.

What conditions qualify in Maine?

There is no fixed list. A provider may certify you if they believe your diagnosis may be eased by medical cannabis, after a full review of your medical history.

Can I get certified by telehealth in Maine?

Yes, as long as the provider holds a live, two-way visit with you and follows their licensing board's rules. If you don't share your primary care provider's contact information, the provider must see you in person.

How long does a Maine certification last?

As long as your provider decides, up to a maximum of one year. After that you need a new certification.

Can I use my out-of-state card in Maine?

Yes, if your card is from one of the 28 jurisdictions Maine has approved. Visiting patients show their home-state card or other state-issued patient documentation and may buy up to 2.5 ounces every 15 days.
