Does chronic pain qualify for a medical card in Maine?

Very likely. Maine doesn't limit certification to a fixed list — providers can recommend cannabis for conditions they believe it will help. That includes patients with chronic pain when the provider agrees it's appropriate.

Yes. Maine has no fixed condition list; providers may certify any patient whose diagnosis they believe may be eased by therapeutic or palliative cannabis use.

About chronic pain

Chronic pain is pain that persists beyond normal healing time, usually defined as more than three months. It can follow an injury or surgery, come from nerve damage (neuropathy), or travel with conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia or endometriosis.

Stronger evidence. The National Academies found substantial evidence that cannabis is an effective treatment for chronic pain in adults. Most trials looked at neuropathic pain and measured modest reductions in pain scores, and many patients use cannabis to cut back on other medications.

Symptoms Maine patients most often hope to ease:

  • Persistent aching or burning pain
  • Nerve pain such as tingling, shooting or electric sensations
  • Pain that keeps you from sleeping
  • Muscle tension and spasms
  • Side effects or limited relief from current pain medicines
Before you start. Combining cannabis with opioids, benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, sleep medicines or alcohol can cause dangerous drowsiness. CBD can change blood levels of medicines processed by the liver, including warfarin and some seizure and pain medicines.

How to get certified in Maine

  1. Book a visit with a Maine-licensed physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant who certifies patients for medical cannabis.
  2. Have a full medical-history assessment, either in person or by live video. In-person is required if you don't give your primary care provider's contact details.
  3. Get your written certification on tamper-resistant paper, which the provider may also send as a matching digital image.
  4. Keep the certification with you and show it at medical dispensaries or to a registered caregiver.
  5. If you want someone else to grow for you, sign a caregiver designation form. You may also grow at home within the plant limits.

Maine allows the evaluation by telehealth, so you can see a Maine-licensed provider by video. Our evaluation starts at $79 and is charged only if you're approved.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for chronic pain?

Helpful records include: medical records that describe the cause or diagnosis of your pain, such as imaging, specialist notes or a pain clinic summary; a list of treatments you have tried, including medicines, physical therapy, injections or surgery; notes on how long the pain has lasted and how it affects your daily life. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Maine provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Maine?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Certification is issued by the provider at the visit; there is no state application to process.

Can I renew online in Maine?

In most cases, yes. Before your certification expires (after one year at most), see a provider again for a new one. Renewals can be done by live telehealth.
