Washington medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions Washington patients ask most, based on the Washington Medical Cannabis Program's own guidance.

Can I get my first Washington medical cannabis authorization online?

No. The first authorization requires an in-person visit with your practitioner. After that, your practitioner can allow renewals by telemedicine.

What is the difference between an authorization and a recognition card?

The authorization is the form your practitioner signs. The recognition card comes from being entered in the state database at an endorsed store, and it gives you tax-free purchases, higher limits and more home grow plants.

Do I have to register in the database?

Adults do not have to, but without registering you get no tax exemption and only the adult-use purchase limits. Patients under 18 must be registered.

How much does the recognition card cost?

The state fee is at least $1, and stores may charge a bit more to cover their costs. Your practitioner visit is a separate cost.

Can I use my medical card from another state in Washington?

No. Washington does not recognize out-of-state authorizations, and you must be a Washington resident to register.
