Virginia medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions Virginia patients ask most, based on the Virginia Medical Cannabis Program's own guidance.

Do I need a medical cannabis card in Virginia?

No. Adult patients only need a valid written certification from a practitioner and a photo ID to buy at a dispensary. You can still pay $50 for an optional registration card if you want one.

What conditions qualify for medical cannabis in Virginia?

There is no fixed list. A licensed practitioner can certify you for any diagnosed condition or disease they think cannabis may help.

Can I get certified through telehealth in Virginia?

Yes. State law allows certification by telemedicine as long as the visit uses real-time audio and video.

How long is a Virginia certification good for?

Up to one year from issue, unless the practitioner sets an earlier expiration date. After that you need a new certification.

Can I use a medical card from another state in Virginia?

No. You need a certification from a Virginia-licensed practitioner, but you can qualify if you live in Virginia only temporarily.

Does Virginia still accept paper certifications?

The CCA moved to issuing certifications through its online portal on December 1, 2025, and older paper certifications stay valid until they expire. A January 2026 Attorney General opinion says the CCA cannot require electronic-only certifications, so check with your practitioner or dispensary.
