PTSD and medical marijuana in Montana: do you qualify?

Yes. The Montana Medical Marijuana Program lists Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a qualifying condition. A Montana-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after a frightening or life-threatening event. Symptoms include intrusive memories, avoidance, negative mood and being constantly on edge.

Limited evidence. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabinoids improve PTSD symptoms, based on a small trial of nabilone for nightmares. Many patients report better sleep and fewer nightmares, and larger studies are under way.

Symptoms Montana patients most often hope to ease:

  • Nightmares
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Feeling on edge or easily startled
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Intrusive memories that are hard to switch off
Before you start. High-THC products can worsen anxiety, panic or paranoia in some people. People with PTSD have a higher risk of developing cannabis use disorder, especially with daily use.

How to get certified in Montana

  1. See a Montana-licensed MD or DO, in person or by telemedicine, who completes the Physician's Statement for a Debilitating Medical Condition.
  2. Within 60 days of the statement date, start a new medical marijuana application in the Montana TransAction Portal (TAP).
  3. Upload proof of Montana residency and pay the $20 fee.
  4. If you plan to grow, add the property deed or the owner's written permission.
  5. Print the temporary card shown after you submit, and the physical card follows once approved.
  6. Name up to two designated purchasers aged 21 or older if you need help buying.

Can I renew online in Montana?

In most cases, yes. Renew each year through TAP with a new Physician's Statement and the $20 fee. Report changes to name, address, physician or condition within ten days.
