Can you get a medical marijuana card for PTSD in Maryland?

Yes. The Maryland Medical Cannabis Program lists Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a qualifying condition. A Maryland-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after a frightening or life-threatening event. Symptoms include intrusive memories, avoidance, negative mood and being constantly on edge.

Limited evidence. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabinoids improve PTSD symptoms, based on a small trial of nabilone for nightmares. Many patients report better sleep and fewer nightmares, and larger studies are under way.

Symptoms Maryland patients most often hope to ease:

  • Nightmares
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Feeling on edge or easily startled
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Intrusive memories that are hard to switch off
Before you start. High-THC products can worsen anxiety, panic or paranoia in some people. People with PTSD have a higher risk of developing cannabis use disorder, especially with daily use.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for PTSD?

Helpful records include: a PTSD diagnosis from a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist or primary care doctor; records of therapy and medicines you have tried and how well they worked; for veterans, VA records or a service-connected disability letter if you have one. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Maryland provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Maryland?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Patient ID often same day.

Can I renew online in Maryland?

In most cases, yes. Your certifying provider must complete a new full assessment within 365 days to reissue your certification, and this can be done by telehealth. Keep your OneStop registration current.
