Does PTSD qualify for a medical card in Arkansas?

Yes. The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Program lists Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a qualifying condition. An Arkansas-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after a frightening or life-threatening event. Symptoms include intrusive memories, avoidance, negative mood and being constantly on edge.

Limited evidence. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabinoids improve PTSD symptoms, based on a small trial of nabilone for nightmares. Many patients report better sleep and fewer nightmares, and larger studies are under way.

Symptoms Arkansas patients most often hope to ease:

  • Nightmares
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Feeling on edge or easily startled
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Intrusive memories that are hard to switch off
Before you start. High-THC products can worsen anxiety, panic or paranoia in some people. People with PTSD have a higher risk of developing cannabis use disorder, especially with daily use.

Helpful records include: a PTSD diagnosis from a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist or primary care doctor; records of therapy and medicines you have tried and how well they worked; for veterans, VA records or a service-connected disability letter if you have one. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Arkansas provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Arkansas?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Up to 14 days from receipt of a complete application and payment.

Can I renew online in Arkansas?

In most cases, yes. Renewal opens up to 60 days before your card expires and requires a new physician certification and another $50 fee.
