PTSD and medical marijuana in Arizona: do you qualify?

Yes. The Arizona Medical Marijuana Program lists Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a qualifying condition. An Arizona-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after a frightening or life-threatening event. Symptoms include intrusive memories, avoidance, negative mood and being constantly on edge.

Limited evidence. The National Academies found limited evidence that cannabinoids improve PTSD symptoms, based on a small trial of nabilone for nightmares. Many patients report better sleep and fewer nightmares, and larger studies are under way.

Symptoms Arizona patients most often hope to ease:

  • Nightmares
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Feeling on edge or easily startled
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Intrusive memories that are hard to switch off
Before you start. High-THC products can worsen anxiety, panic or paranoia in some people. People with PTSD have a higher risk of developing cannabis use disorder, especially with daily use.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for PTSD?

Helpful records include: a PTSD diagnosis from a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist or primary care doctor; records of therapy and medicines you have tried and how well they worked; for veterans, VA records or a service-connected disability letter if you have one. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your Arizona provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in Arizona?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Usually within 2 weeks.

Can I renew online in Arizona?

In most cases, yes. Cards are renewed every two years. The renewal opens 90 days before expiration and needs a new physician certification, photo and attestation plus the same fee as a new card.
