Ohio medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions Ohio patients ask most, based on the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (MMCP)'s own guidance.

How much does an Ohio medical marijuana card cost?

The Division of Cannabis Control says there is no state cost to activate or renew registration. You still pay your physician for the visit.

Can I get my Ohio recommendation through telehealth?

Yes. The Division says you need an in-person or telemedicine visit with a certified physician at least once a year, which covers both new and renewing patients.

Is a medical card still worth it now that adult-use cannabis is legal in Ohio?

Medical purchases are exempt from the 10% excise tax on adult-use sales, and patients can buy up to four days' limits at once. Patients under 21 can also buy only through the medical program.

How much can an Ohio patient buy?

Each day you may buy up to 2.5 ounces of plant material and 15,000 mg of THC in other products. Patients may buy up to four days' worth at once, but you may never hold more than a 90-day supply.

My condition isn't listed — can my physician still recommend cannabis?

No. It must be one of the 26 conditions. Many chronic pain conditions qualify under the pain category, and anyone can petition the State Medical Board to add a condition.
