Montana medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program
Answers to the questions Montana patients ask most, based on the Montana Medical Marijuana Program's own guidance.
How much does a Montana medical marijuana card cost?
The state fee is $20 for a new card or a renewal, and a replacement costs $10. All fees are non-refundable, and the physician's visit is charged separately.
Can I get my physician statement by telehealth in Montana?
Yes. State law allows the exam by telemedicine if the physician follows the medical board's telemedicine rules. Audio-only visits are allowed only after an in-person relationship exists.
Why get a medical card when adult-use is legal in Montana?
Cardholders pay a 4% state tax instead of the higher adult-use rate, can grow twice as many plants (4 mature and 4 seedlings), and can buy from age 18.
How much can a Montana cardholder buy?
Up to 1 ounce of flower a day and 5 ounces a month, or the equivalent in edibles or concentrates. You can petition to raise the monthly limit to 8 ounces.
How do minors qualify in Montana?
A parent or guardian applies using the Physician's Statement for Minors, which usually needs two physicians unless one is an oncologist, neurologist or epileptologist. Proof of guardianship is required.
