Minnesota medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions Minnesota patients ask most, based on the Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program's own guidance.

How much does it cost to join Minnesota's medical cannabis program?

There is no state enrollment fee since July 1, 2023. You pay the dispensary for products and the practitioner for the visit, and insurance does not cover the products.

What conditions qualify in Minnesota?

OCM lists named conditions such as chronic pain, PTSD, cancer, IBS and sleep apnea. It also includes any medical condition for which your practitioner has authorized cannabis.

Can I be certified by telehealth?

Yes. Minnesota law allows practitioner certifications and recertifications by telehealth.

How long does enrollment last?

Three years. You then reenroll with a new certification. Apply within 90 days of being certified, or the certification expires.

Do I still need the program now that adult-use is legal?

Program patients get pharmacist consultations, patient-specific labeled products, exemption from adult-use possession limits, and no sales tax or cannabis gross receipts tax on their medical purchases.
