Massachusetts medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program
Answers to the questions Massachusetts patients ask most, based on the Medical Use of Marijuana Program's own guidance.
How much does a Massachusetts medical marijuana card cost?
The state charges nothing to register or renew. Providers set their own fees for the certification visit, and a replacement card costs $10 (waivable for hardship).
Can I get certified by telehealth in Massachusetts?
Renewals can be done by telehealth with any certifying provider. For a first certification, telehealth is available only through providers who hold a CCC waiver; others must see you in person.
How much can I possess as a patient?
The standard limit is a 60-day supply, defined as 10 ounces. Your provider may certify a larger amount if it is medically needed.
Do patients pay tax on medical marijuana in Massachusetts?
No. Showing your program ID card and government ID at purchase exempts you from the marijuana excise tax and sales tax charged on adult-use sales.
Can I use my out-of-state medical card in Massachusetts?
No. Only registered Massachusetts patients and their caregivers may buy medical marijuana. Visitors 21 and older can buy from adult-use retailers instead.
