Louisiana medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions Louisiana patients ask most, based on the Louisiana Medical (Therapeutic) Marijuana Program's own guidance.

Do I need a state medical marijuana card in Louisiana?

No. Louisiana has no patient registry and issues no state ID card. You need a recommendation from an authorized clinician, which you then use at a state-permitted retailer.

What conditions qualify in Louisiana?

The law lists conditions such as cancer, PTSD, intractable pain, seizure disorders and several neurodegenerative diseases. A clinician may also recommend for any other condition they consider debilitating for you.

Can I get a recommendation through telehealth?

The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners has said it will not take enforcement action against clinicians who recommend without a first in-person visit. The board notes the policy is still under review, so ask your clinician how they handle visits.

How much can I buy at one time?

A retailer may sell a patient no more than 71 grams (2.5 ounces) of raw or crude marijuana in any 14-day period.

Can I use an out-of-state medical card in Louisiana?

State law recognizes visiting qualifying patients who hold a valid medical marijuana card from another state, and they can buy from Louisiana permitted retailers. Retailers may not deliver to addresses outside Louisiana.
