Does insomnia qualify for a medical card in New Hampshire?

Yes. The Therapeutic Cannabis Program (TCP) lists Qualifying symptoms (needed with a diagnosis above): agitation of Alzheimer's disease; cachexia; chemotherapy-induced anorexia; constant or severe nausea; elevated intraocular pressure; moderate to severe insomnia; moderate to severe vomiting; seizures; severe pain; severe, persistent muscle spasms; as a qualifying condition. A New Hampshire-licensed provider still has to evaluate you and agree that cannabis is appropriate.

About insomnia

Chronic insomnia means trouble sleeping at least three nights a week for three months or more. It often travels with pain, anxiety, depression or PTSD.

Moderate evidence. The National Academies found moderate evidence that cannabinoids improve short-term sleep in people whose sleep is disturbed by sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, chronic pain or multiple sclerosis.

Symptoms New Hampshire patients most often hope to ease:

  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Waking up during the night and not getting back to sleep
  • Racing thoughts at bedtime
  • Sleep disrupted by pain or discomfort
  • Daytime tiredness and poor focus
Before you start. Tolerance can build with nightly use, so the same amount may help less over time. Combining cannabis with sleeping pills, benzodiazepines, opioids or alcohol can cause excessive sedation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need medical records for insomnia?

Helpful records include: notes from your doctor documenting insomnia or a sleep study report if you have one; a list of sleep treatments you have tried, including sleep medicines or cognitive behavioral therapy; a sleep diary showing your typical bedtime, wake time and night-time awakenings. Many patients are still evaluated on their history alone, and your New Hampshire provider will tell you if more is needed.

How long does certification take in New Hampshire?

The provider visit takes about 15 minutes. Card mailed within 3 weeks of a complete application; an incomplete-application notice is sent within 10 days.

Can I renew online in New Hampshire?

In most cases, yes. Renewal uses the same forms and $50 fee as a new application, and proof of residency is not needed if your address has not changed. A certification issued for less than 3 years may instead be extended by the same provider, up to 3 years in total.
