Illinois medical marijuana FAQ: answers from the official program

Answers to the questions Illinois patients ask most, based on the Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Program (Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program)'s own guidance.

Why get a medical card in Illinois if recreational cannabis is legal?

Medical purchases are taxed at the 1% rate used for other drugs and skip the adult-use excise tax. Patients can also buy up to 2.5 ounces every 14 days and grow up to five plants.

Can I see a provider online for my Illinois certification?

Yes. IDPH allows the required exam to be done remotely, including by telemedicine. The certification must be linked to your application within 90 days.

How much does an Illinois medical cannabis card cost?

$50 for one year, $100 for two years or $125 for three years. Veterans and people receiving SSI or SSDI pay $25, $50 or $75.

Can I buy cannabis before my card arrives?

Yes. Once your application is submitted, you can generate a provisional letter (temporary card) from the portal and use it at a licensed medical dispensary.

What do I need to prove I live in Illinois?

A valid Illinois driver's license, temporary visitor driver's license or state ID card is enough. Without one, you must provide other approved proof of residency.
